In this video I hope to shed some light on some provocative issues. First, craving fatty, sugary, high-calorie foods is not your fault. However, it is your responsibility—you have to learn to manage this vestibule pattern passed down through generations of DNA.

I have included a transcription of the video below. Enjoy!

Note: Thanks to too many years in scuba, I continually say “vestibular” in the video. The correct term of course is vestigial. But other than that… ; )

Note: You can learn more about how to escape the “vestigial loop” covered in this video while still eating your favorite foods and losing all the weight you want by picking up my book The Ever Other Day Diet below…

Every Other Day Diet

TRANSCRIPTION

Hi, Jon Benson from Jon Benson Fitness dot com. Again, excuse the video-less video… my iCam is busted, but I’m getting it fixed this weekend.

If you missed the first video in this series, “Low Carb Lunacy”, be sure to check that out. Link below:

Low Carb Lunacy Video

Fat is not your fault.

Craving foods high in fat is not your fault.

Craving foods high in sugar is not your fault.

Craving high-calorie foods is not your fault.

Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Well, it’s a biological and evolutionary fact.

BUT….

Guess what.

Just as a ruptured appendix is not your fault, it’s damn well your responsibility.

Just as your appendix is primarily useless; a vestigial organ no longer required for daily function, so is… yep.

Your cravings for sugar, fat, and calories.

Picture yourself living on the Savannah countless thousands of years ago. Everything you ate you either hunted or gathered—and for most of your days hunting was far more rewarded by your clan and by the females than gathering.

Gathering was the sign of a poor hunter. In fact, there’s an old joke: Vegetarian in the Cherokee tongue means Bad Hunter.

Turns out there may be more to this joke than you think.

On the Savannah, you might go days without food. Hunger and discomfort was associated mentally with “gathering” — picking up second choice. Is it any wonder so many of us as children seem to have a built-in aversion to vegetables? Our ancestors probably viewed what little vegetables were available during the warmer seasons as scraps from a table — not nearly enough calories, protein or fat to sustain themselves against the ravages of the day.

But bring home a nice tiger or lean game and presto: Hero status. The clan celebrated. The women swooned (great hunters were like rock stars in that day, or so I can imagine.) And the clan ate like crazy. Why? Who knew when the next high-fat, high protein, super-filling meal would come?

Folks, this same pattern, now just a vestigial mental organ if you will, is very much alive in your DNA. The problem? That tiger is now conveniently packed in your grocery’s freezer section. You may expend about 75 calories driving to the store, picking up a nice fatted piece of beef, drive home, cook it, and serve it. Hardly worthy of lavish praises from the female in your “clan”… but again, that genetic memory is a monster. It kicks in. The “provider” is still “worshiped” in the recesses of your DNA guys.

Unfortunately, it’s now a matter of economics, not hunting prowess. And being good with money rarely entails expending calories. So, that same drive to collect high-calorie, high-fat, energy-sustaining food is all but useless in today’s evolved society.

Same with sugars. When sweet fruits were in season on the Savannah, they provided the energy needed for the hunt. They tasted great. They were, as some anthropologists suggest, a type of early aphrodisiac. Sugar can trigger powerful “feel good” hormones, especially in its refined form. So, if you cannot eat filling food, how about a quick fix of feel good food?

Again, you were rewarded for this, albeit probably not as much — and definitely in different ways — back on the Savannah.

So you’re bucking eons of societal evolution folks… countless thousands of years of how humans ate, every time you sense hunger. Every. Single. Time.

Only now, everything is at your fingertips. Ladies, you no longer need a “hunter” — you can “hunt” for yourselves. Unfortunately you expend far less calories than males, both then and now. Some theorize than the females were responsible for preparing the meals. that, in and of itself, was very demanding calorically. Now… er… not so much. Guys, the hunt is over. All that’s left is brining in the cash to pay for the meals — one of the reasons, btw, many psychologists believe women are attracted to security of wealth. Yep — it all goes back to the hunting fields.

The obvious problem is that we now have these foods — but we have them at our fingertips and we have them on steroids multiplied by infinity. Our sugars are 100x sweeter than any fruit ancient man could have ever tasted. Our beef is loaded with hormones and unhealthy altered fats never known in the ancient world.

But our vestigial cravings are still there.

So, while craving foods that are high in sugar and fat makes perfect biological sense, it is no different than your appendix. It is a useless vestigial organ if you will, and it must be removed.

That part is your responsibility. It is the price we pay for societal evolution. But you can do it. As we’ve evolved, we’ve also become far more intelligent. More aware of our actions and their consequences. And we can fool the body quite nicely into thinking it has all the nutrients it needs.

I cover more about how to trick the body out of this historical “loop” of hunter/gatherism in my book The Every Other Day Diet

Every Other Day Diet

Think about it. Comment below. Let me know if this resonates with you at all.

Thanks.

Tony Horton P90XSo alot of you know that I went to Atlanta this past weekend for a Tony Horton/P90X Beachbody Business Opportunity meeting. It was a last minute decision to go and so I was literally in the ATL for 22 hours total. But it was so worth it (minus my picture of me and Tony as well as some other pictures that are oddly missing from my camera).

Before I go further let me explain that I just could hardly care about “celebrity”, if you will. But listening to Tony Horton on stage was fantastic. For those of you that have any of his workouts or actually those of you that don’t – he is the real deal. He was interesting, funny, down to earth. I am not easily impressed yet I found myself smiling through his entire time on stage – chuckled out loud many times – which people who really know me know that you have to be pretty funny for that.

On top of that my coach Robert, myself, head master coach Chris, another coach Keith and his wife had lunch with Tony. He really walks the walk people. He is not telling you to eat one thing while he is eating another. It is a lifestyle. In fact all the coaches that I spent time with really live that lifestyle – clean eating and hard exercise. In fact one coach, Mark that I had dinner with the previous night was such a clean eater – very few vices. As a rehabilitating (that would be constantly trying to fix) carb/food addict – it was really inspiring for me. I try to eat well but sometimes my addictions win. I just felt like being around these people, Tony, my coach and some of the other coaches – that I was inspired to come back and clean my diet up even more, to work out even harder.

So I guess the moral of the story is (beyond Tony Horton is great) – is to surround yourself with people who inspire you to be your best. People who are fit and active, people who eat healthy, people who are successful. When you do that you will have no alternative to but to follow in their footsteps.

So get with people who inspire you – they will carry you until you can carry yourself. Then pay it forward, be an inspiration to someone else – you may need to carry them for a bit. While I am at it be a giver in life vs a taker. I promise the more you give of yourself the more you will get back – but give from your heart.

Hopefully I have inspired you a bit to start making some positive changes in your life.

So if you are keeping up with me on my blog, facebook or twitter you know that I have hinted to a radical new eating plan.  Now you may think I was just playing with your emotions but I have a real reason for not revealing it until today.

There are a small handful of fitness and weight loss gurus that I follow very closely.  Now I am very, very choosy about who I follow.  I like people that back up their words with studies and science.  I like people who walk the walk and talk the talk if you will.  And I follow gurus that have a similar philosophy to mine.  Weight loss is an ever evolving arena and no matter how much you know you can always learn more.

Radical Fat Loss BlueprintSo as I was saying I follow a few select gurus, one of which is on the top of my favorites list.  One day he sent me info on his new Radical Fat Loss Blueprint(RFLB).  In the email I could see that this was not for the faint of heart, the wimps or the complainers of the world.  This plan was radical for real.  So radical, actually, that I passed on the original opportunity to try it because honestly I thought I couldn’t do it.  Even if you manage to reach your goal, maintain your goal that doesn’t mean that you not a carb junkie at heart.  A sugar/carb addiction is truly an addiction – like alcohol or drug – carbs are my drug of choice (sometimes of not choice) – so there are days when you feel like you cannot even be radical for a day and this plan was 21 days.  So why all the mystery over the past couple of days.  Honestly, I wanted to make sure I could actually get through the detox days before I told you what the plan was.  What good would it have been if I couldn’t even do the plan.

If you recall my last post early in the week about my romance with Carb and Sugar – Confessions of a Carb Addict- that although I was really at my goal weight – all of sudden I was having this torrid affair with Oreos and other sweets.  Normally, my weight hovers around 117 to 118, but all of the sudden I was 120, 121, 121.6.  If  I didn’t do something “radical”  I was on my way back to Chunkytown.  So walla, my mind went back to this RFLB and I thought ok sister, 21 days – suck it up buttercup before you turn into a peanutbutter cup.

So I started this plan on Monday, by Tues I was back to 119.4.  Yes I know, water weight.  I am well aware that most if not all of that was water weight.  Carbs do make me retain water and on this plan I got quite familiar with my bathroom, Monday.  But I am cool with that cause that water had to go.  The next day 118.6, Thurs 117.4 and today 116.4.  That’s below my normal 117/118.  Not only am I seeing results, but my carb/sugar cravings were gone by Tuesday.  Does that mean if my sweetheart, Oreo, were right in front of me that we wouldn’t be back together again - heck yah, I’m not that strong yet, but the other snacks in my house are not calling me so I am good with that.

Every Other Day DietSo how do you get your hands on this Radical Fat Loss Program?  Well it is free.  One caveat…it is free with the purchase of Jon’s day to day weight loss book Every Other Day Diet.  Trickery, you say?  No, Jon is very set on the fact that this radical plan is 21 days only and you need a good plan to follow on day 22, 23 and beyond otherwise those tough 21 days will all be for not. So you purchase EODD and you get RFLB free, as well as his Personal Fat Loss Certification Course.  Actually you have to do the course and let me tell you it is so worth it.  You will learn things about fat loss that you never knew.  Even experts will find something to learn.  I am also giving you a link to his site so register – that’s free too.  That way you can follow him too.  If your at all into fitness, weight loss, nutrition you will find yourself putting him on the top of your guru list too.

So I am finished with the detox portion – thank goodness and on to the rest of the blueprint. I will check in with you as I go here and there. Join me if you like – you can really get some major progress or those last 10 to 20 pounds off before Memorial weekend.

Carb Addiction

I Live to Eat

I have my degree in Dietetics and Nutrition.  I am a Team Beachbody Coach.  I blog about nutrition, fitness and weight loss.  Most who don’t know me personally may think since I have reached my goal weight that maybe I am super human.  Ok that might be a bit much, but when you follow someone you think they never have problems with their diet and eating.  Now I am sure there are “experts” out there that thanks to phenominal genes don’t have food issues.  But if you are following me, Julie Linhart, then you should know that I am very human.  The reason I have the background I have and why I became a Beachbody coach is because I have real issues with food.  My healthy weight comes from hard work and healthy eating.  And honestly, every so often, my addiction to food takes over.

My Confession
oreosThat being said – I have realized over the past couple of weeks that i have let my eating get totally out of control – Yep the carbs and the sugar cravings had taken over.  I would find myself eating hot fudge right out of the jar -no need to heat it up or even put it on something – just the jar and a spoon – within minutes a half a jar gone.  I picked up some Oreos for my kids…ha ha who was I kidding, for my kids.  I really did buy it for them but they did not get even one Oreo.  I managed to finish the whole pack in a matter of two days.  When my kids asked me where the yummy sugary carbs (they didn’t really call them that) went off to – I jokingly said “I think mom has a problem” – ” I might need to go to sugar rehab”.  Although said in jest, the truth was I did have a problem a really big problem.

Get Rid Of So Called Friends
So it was time to say goodbye to my old friend Carb (who really has been more enemy than friend).  I had to before the pounds started piling on.  So yesterday I went radical – completely cut off of the carbs and I am pulling myself back into control mode.  I will tell you just one day without I already feel like myself again and my cravings already subsiding.   Does that mean that I wouldn’t love to have some more Oreos?  Heck no!  But it does feel good to be in control again and not feel like I have to have them.  Now one day is not enough, I will be following my new eating plan for 21 days.  Right now I am on Day 2 – the first 4 days are very strict detox days.  I will let you in on the name of this plan in a few days.  I really just want to see how doable it is before I give you all the details.  Nothing worse than someone giving you a plan they can’t even do themselves, right?

So here is what I am hoping for

I want and need Buddies & Cheerleaders.  I want you to join me.  I want you to help me stick to my plan and stick to my workouts.  I want to do the same for you.  If you are not already a free member to Team Beachbody,  join!  It really is free (yes there is a paid version, but the free one works for what I am asking you to do).  So again, I want you to get your free membership through me and I want you to log in a workout (any workout, doesn’t have to be a Beachbody workout) 5 to 6 times this week and every week until Memorial Weekend.    You may not be able to workout at the exact same time as me, but workout.   Feel free to comment, email, IM me – let me know that you are with me.

Finally, from today until May 23, I want you to really eat healthy and be in control.  Whatever eating plan you are following, really rock it for the next 25 days.  Maybe you have loosened up the reins lately, well tighten them up.  Put full effort into it.  25 days – you can do it, I can do it, we can do it.  Let’s cheer each other on.

Today I started a facebook group call Team Up To Be Fit – another way we can stay in touch and cheer each other on.  Join the group – it won’t cost you a thing, but maybe some pounds that you want to get rid of.

Check out this video of April $1000 Beachbody Winners for more inspiration.

Should Net Carbs include Sugar Alcohol or not

xylitolxylitolIf you are a low carber, I’m betting you know the term “net carbs”.  For non- low carbers that is usually carbs minus fiber.  But now with sugar alcohols low carbers feel as though they have another thing they can minus from the carb count.   Anyway, excluding sugar alcohols is dodgy at best. The difference between normal sugar and sugar alcohol is that sugar alcohol takes longer to digest, so it doesn’t do the dreaded sugar spike. However, you still digest it eventually, so it’s part of your daily tally.

Here’s a cool article from Yale-New Haven Hospital explaining sugar alcohols:

Eat any sugar alcohol lately?

If you’ve looked lately at the “Nutrition Facts” panel on a pack of sugar-free gum or candy, you might be surprised to see that it contains “sugar alcohol.” Don’t let the name fool you. These ingredients were given this consumer-friendly name because part of their structure resembles sugar and part is similar to alcohol.

Not one in the same

Don’t be confused. Although they share a similar name, sugar alcohol and alcoholic beverages do not have the same chemical structure. Sugar alcohol does not contain ethanol, which is found in alcoholic beverages.

What is sugar alcohol?

Sugar alcohols, also know as polyols, are ingredients used as sweeteners and bulking agents. They occur naturally in foods and come from plant products such as fruits and berries. As a sugar substitute, they provide fewer calories (about a half to one-third less calories) than regular sugar. This is because they are converted to glucose more slowly, require little or no insulin to be metabolized and don’t cause sudden increases in blood sugar. This makes them popular among individuals with diabetes; however, their use is becoming more common by just about everyone. You may be consuming them and not even know it.

Identifying them

Common sugar alcohols are mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, lactitol, isomalt, maltitol and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates (HSH). Sugar alcohols are not commonly used in home food preparation, but are found in many processed foods. Food products labeled “sugar-free,” including hard candies, cookies, chewing gums, soft drinks and throat lozenges often consist of sugar alcohols. They are frequently used in toothpaste and mouthwash too.

Check carbohydrates

So why are sugar alcohols used so often? For one thing, they help to provide the sweet flavor to food in many products marketed towards individuals with diabetes. But, beware! There is often the misconception that all sugar alcohol-containing products are “free foods.” Some of these products may still contain significant amounts of carbohydrates. It’s important to check the food label for the total carbohydrate contained in the product and talk with a registered dietitian to determine how it will best fit into your meal plan.

If a manufacturer uses the term “sugar free” or “no added sugar,” they must list the grams of sugar alcohols. If more than one sugar alcohol is used in a product, the “Nutrition Facts” panel will list the amount of sugar alcohol it contains under the total carbohydrate. If just one sugar alcohol is used, the label will list its specific name, for example, “mannitol” or “hydrogenated starch hydrolysates.”

Pros and cons of sugar alcohols

On the positive side, sugar alcohols contain less calories (1.5 – 3 calories per gram) than sugar (4 calories per gram), and they do not cause tooth decay like sugar does. Therefore, many “sugar-free” gums including Trident® and Extra® are made with sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols also add texture to foods, retain moisture better and prevent foods from browning when they are heated.

Unfortunately, there are some negatives associated with sugar alcohols. The most common side effect is the possibility of bloating and diarrhea when sugar alcohols are eaten in excessive amounts. There is also some evidence that sugar alcohols, much like fructose (natural fruit sugar) in fruit and fruit juice can cause a “laxative effect.” Weight gain has been seen when these products are overeaten. The American Diabetes Association claims that sugar alcohols are acceptable in a moderate amount but should not be eaten in excess. Some people with diabetes, especially Type I diabetics, have found that their blood sugars rise if sugar alcohols are eaten in uncontrolled amounts.

Sugar alcohols vs. artificial sweeteners

Sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin (Sweet & Low®) and aspartame (Equal® or Nutrasweet®), are not one and the same. One difference between the two types of sugar substitutes is that the artificial sweeteners contain zero calories whereas sugar alcohols contain about 2.6 calories per gram. Another issue is diabetes management. Artificial sweeteners do not contain carbohydrates so they do not cause blood sugar to elevate, whereas, sugar alcohols have some effect on blood sugar. Overall, both can be useful in diabetes management when used properly.

Forms of sugar alcohol

Mannitol occurs naturally in pineapples, olives, asparagus, sweet potatoes and carrots. It is extracted from seaweed for use in food manufacturing. Mannitol has 50-70 percent of the relative sweetness of sugar, which means more must be used to equal the sweetness of sugar. Mannitol lingers in the intestines for a long time and therefore often causes bloating and diarrhea.

Sorbitol is found naturally in fruits and vegetables. It is manufactured from corn syrup. Sorbitol has only 50 percent of the relative sweetness of sugar which means twice as much must be used to deliver a similar amount of sweetness to a product. It has less of a tendency to cause diarrhea compared to mannitol. It is often an ingredient in sugar-free gums and candies.

Xylitol is also called “wood sugar” and occurs naturally in straw, corncobs, fruit, vegetables, cereals, mushrooms and some cereals. Xylitol has the same relative sweetness as sugar. It is found in chewing gums.

Lactitol has about 30-40 percent of sugar’s sweetening power, but its taste and solubility profile resembles sugar so it is often found in sugar-free ice cream, chocolate, hard and soft candies, baked goods, sugar-reduced preserves and chewing gums.

Isomalt is 45 – 65 percent as sweet as sugar and does not tend to lose its sweetness or break down during the heating process. Isomalt absorbs little water, so it is often used in hard candies, toffee, cough drops and lollipops.

Maltitol is 75 percent as sweet as sugar. It is used in sugar-free hard candies, chewing gum, chocolate-flavored desserts, baked goods and ice cream because it gives a creamy texture to foods.

Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates (HSH) are produced by the partial hydrolysis of corn. HSH are nutritive sweeteners that provide 40 – 90 percent of the sweetness of sugar. HSH do not crystallize and are used extensively in confections, baked goods and mouthwashes

My thoughts

So that is Sugar Alcohols in a nutshell.  Now for my opinion.  I am not a fan of sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners.  Obviously in very small quantity they can be used, but my recommendation is to avoid them if possible.  Personally my digestive system does not do well with most sugar alcohols and I really don’t like the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners.  Latest studies are indicating that artificial sweeteners deaden the body’s ability to detect sweet.  I will have more posts on this subject another time but for now I say keep artificial sugars and sugar alcohols to a minimum.

You see, the reason why most diets are ineffective with burning off fat and dropping pounds is because of the simple fact that they go against the core principles of successful weight loss and fat loss. In order to lose 10 pounds of fat, you must increase your metabolic rate. Fad diets actually drop your metabolic rate. The reason they drop your metabolic rate is because majority of those diets promote calorie reduction, and nutrient reduction such as carbs and fats. When you restrict those things from your body, your metabolism actually slows down…not increases!

The best type of diet program to lose 10 pounds of fat fast is a new diet system called calorie shifting. This dieting system will actually encourage you to get the amount of calories you are supposed to get daily…which means no more starvation! The way it works is that will teach you how to take the calories from the food you eat and shift them on a daily basis so that you can boost your metabolism to its highest peak. This will of course lead to a drop in body fat percentage and a large amount of weight lost in a very short time frame.

Listen, if you’re ready to lose those stubborn pounds and burn off stubborn fat quickly, then I highly recommend for you to look into a tryout the calorie shifting dieting system!

Are you confused about the foods you can eat while you are on a diet? Many people are under the misconception that they need to eat salads, drink plenty of water and have to avoid all sweets and carbohydrates.

There is so much more you are able to eat and maintain a healthy diet. Here are some of the best food for weight loss that you probably didn’t know you eat.

1. Eggs. Yes, you can eat eggs and no you do not have to worry about separating the yolk from the whites. In fact, eating eggs can actually assist in shedding some pounds.

2. Steak. Recent studies have revealed astonishing results when it comes to dieting and red meat. Steak has a protein in it that allows the body to hold onto the muscle mass when weight is lost even in small amounts. Studies have proven more weight can be lost if the person is consuming red meats more frequently than those on the same diet with the exception of they do not have any red meat.

3. Apples. Apples might already be on your list of foods you know you can have, but did you know if you eat an apple shortly before you eat pasta you can actually lower your calorie intake from the pasta? This was just something interesting I thought I would share.

4. Pomegranates. Not only does the pomegranate juice have benefits for the dieter but the seeds do as well. They are a tasty nutritious snack to have or a little extra something to change up your salad.

5. Blueberries. They have antioxidants and are a great source of fiber.

6. Parmesan cheese. If you are tired of eating the flavorless cheese like substitutes you do not have to. You can go for the real cheese, Parmesan cheese that is. This should be consumed in moderation, such as one serving a day.

7. Avocados. Although you might be a bit weary of incorporating avocados into your diet because of the fat content, the fat content is actually a good thing. This causes you to feel full faster and more satisfied with smaller portions.

You can find several great recipes online to help you make healthy meals that include the best food for weight loss. Keep in mind, when you are dieting it is important that you are not depriving yourself of necessary nutrition for your overall health.
